This post is just a little check-in to update on how I am doing with everything that is currently happening. I have had a really busy weekend trying to pick the final cuts on the Literary Criticism pieces that will be going into our Toyon 2017 issue. After about a day and a half, I have made my final decisions and it feels great! This process was difficult because we had a few individuals who submitted more than one piece of work for this genre. Toyon's guidelines state that authors only submit one criticism piece to be evaluated. With that in mind, if an author had two worthy essays that could be published, I had to try and decide which out of the two to pick. Each piece that was submitted came with three reviews completed by our fellow staff members. These reviews (along with my own judgement) helped my process of elimination. If nothing changes by Wednesday (10/26/16) Toyon is going to have four works of Literary Criticism! What is coming up next is to inform the authors that their work has been chosen. It will be fun to work with the authors to make sure that their work will be published the way they would like in our magazine.
On another note, it is time to start thinking about our individual final projects. The goal of these projects is to have each staff member create some kind of work that can be shared with next year's staff. Each project should be informal and helpful to current and future staff members of Toyon. I have stated in previous blog posts that I would like to create a staff handbook that could be used and edited for the next staff members of Toyon. Inside of the handbook, I would like to include the following: descriptions of each job title, a description of each stage of the semester and what to expect from these stages and a commonly asked Q&A section in the back of the handbook. I have a few sections of the handbook already started, but because of our busy schedule, I have not been working on it as thoroughly as I would have liked. We have our check ins with our projects in the beginning of November and I would like to have more work done by then.
