Time and the new available printing technologies which have occurred over the years have had an impact on the printing process. Over the weekend, the Toyon staff read a piece by Kyle Schlesinger titled: "The Letterpress In The Mimeo Revolution." In this piece, Schlesinger discusses the history of the publishing process, specifically, the Mimeo Revolution in the 1960s and 70s. This time was where individuals taught "themselves how to print and set type in order to publish the writing they wanted to read" (186). This point in time was very important to the history of printing because it offered quick and cheap production for printed publications.
Today with personal and computers and the internet, the printing process is changing again. People can become "self-published" where they can pay for their own work to be published and not go through a publishing company. People can make more money this way, have the rights to all of their content, and have the access to share what they have written with who they please. Another changing point for publication is online publishing versus printing. More and more written works have chosen to convert to online publishing instead of having a printed publication. Toyon currently has our journal both online and in print. We are currently working on getting our older issues available online for more people to have access to. Online publishing is a complex issue for us because our printed journal is more popular. Also, printed publications are easier to circulate throughout the community. As time changes, especially in regards to environmental friendliness and cleanliness, Toyon could become an online only publication.
At the moment, Toyon wants to be as Eco-friendly as we possibly can. We can accomplish this by printing on recycled paper and using Eco-friendly ink, plus cutting down on the amount of copies we print. Of course next years issue will be available online. For now, we are in the middle ground working with printed and online issues of Toyon. As technology advances, and as societies opinions change, Toyon may convert to an online only publication. Only time will tell.
