Toyon’s Purpose
Humboldt States literary magazine: Toyon. It is a multilingual Journal of literature and art that is open for submission to not only Humboldt students, but for individuals in the county and around the world. As a first time staff on Toyon, I can say that I am not one hundred percent sure how this magazine works. By this I mean I am not sure what the process of Toyon is. How does magazine get put together? How are submissions received and how do the entries that make it into the magazine get chosen? These seem to be typical questions for first time students (like myself) to have when they first join the staff.
What I do have an idea of is the purpose and function of Toyon. My first semester at HSU, I was told that Toyon was a literary magazine which was open submission for everyone. This included all HSU students regardless of their major, students attending College of the Redwoods, members of Humboldt County and the rest of the world. My first thought was “wow, I had no idea that we had something like this on campus. What a great way to bring people together!” In my mind, bringing people together and creating a community for individuals is one of the main purposes and functions of Toyon.
Bringing individuals who are interested and passionate about a certain subject together makes a wonderful community on a college campus. It can encourage those who want to share their work reach out, as where they may not have done so without the access to the magazine. The works that are chosen for the magazine become a part of the campuses history that others in the future can be inspired by. The magazine can also show others what successes they can achieve if they have the courage to share what they love. Another key idea is that community is much more than just one language or subject. Toyon sees this and is working towards having more diversity within the magazine. Having different languages submit can have people realize that writing is more than just one language, it is every language. It can also show how others from a different community or language may view the world. It brings all of us closer. We take part in this magazine because we choose too.
Toyon isn’t just important to the ones who choose to submit their work to it, it is important for the staff as well. Toyon is important for me because it can show me what it is like working with a small group of people on a big project and how to truly accomplish something big. It gives me a kind of work experience. It can show me what I have always wondered about putting a piece of literature together. Toyon is having hands on experience. Toyon is about making people excited on both sides: creating and submitting. Toyon is just one literary magazine that is available out of many, many, more, but I hope that it will be an experience that I will remember being a part of forever. Also, what lead me to my career. The thing I have dreamed of my entire life.
