For this post, I am to find an example of a professional portfolio that I like, and compare that particular blog to mine. I have looked all through out the examples that were given to us and I also Googled examples of other professional portfolios. One of the very first exercises that we completed for Toyon as a group in the beginning of the semester, was to look through these same portfolios and discover what made certain parts of the portfolios likable. It is interesting because my tastes have not changed since then, they have become even stronger. I remember my favorite portfolio was created by Jasmine Schillinger (jasmineschillinger.weebly.com) and I wanted my blog to look a lot like hers. I think we have the exact same layout powered by Weebly. One of the reasons why I liked her portfolio was because it was clean and simple. There was not a lot of distraction or "noise" happening on the website. It was also really easy to navigate. Her menu was not hiding in an icon form, and there was not excessive clicking that I had to do to get to where I wanted to be.
I really like that my blog is simple. I feel that it looks really professional and well thought out. Over the semester, I have gone to a few classes that talked about blogs and what elements can make them easier to navigate. One particular feature that is new to my blog, one may notice (if you have been following me from September,) is that I now have a drop-down tab that takes readers to each individual post. For most of the semester, I did not have this and you would have had to click through my "previous" and "next post" buttons to navigate the posts. I HATED that feature, it was time consuming and a pain to do. I was really glad that these classes showed me how to add the tabs.
I know my blog is not perfect. There are a few elements that are missing from it that I will be soon be adding. One example is that I do not have a resume posted on my blog. I have never completed a resume before, so I need to work on getting one started. Now that I have some job experience from Toyon, I feel it would be a good element to include. I also want to add more "work" pieces to this blog, but have no idea what work to include. This is something that I want to talk with my Toyon instructor about. I also want to take the time to announce that I will be on the Toyon staff again next year for the 2018 issue and will be Managing editor! I am really excited to continue my journey with this literary magazine and have the ability to learn even more about this career.
