I have been doing a lot of thinking this week. I have been reflecting on my job on Toyon, and have realized what an important roll this position is on the magazine. I am the Internal Communications Manager. Being able to communicate with others on a job is really critical. Without communication there are bound to be complications and confusion. Nothing like this has happened in class thank goodness, but there may be a time when it does. That is where my job comes into play. I try my best to prevent this from occurring.
One might ask "what do you do exactly?" Let me give you a general idea. Each class meeting I take notes. I write down everything ranging from announcements made by our class coordinator and our assistant manager, writing down decisions we make together as a class, and sending emails reminding staff members of important reminders and dates. The decisions I note can include how we are going to go about picking submissions, how we are going to advertise and just last class we all voted on the art submissions we received. The art editors will use my notes from class to help them decide on the final entries that we will publish in Toyon.
None of the above can happen if I am not there. The notes do not get taken and they do not get posted. It is a big responsibility to make sure that I am present and paying attention all throughout class. I don't want to leave out anything important in my notes. I know all jobs on the magazine are just as important as mine. Believe me when I say that I'm not trying to make it seem that my job is above the others. It's not. I am just trying to show and explain that if there is not clear communication within the group, no one on the staff can do their job properly. I just want to do my best job to make sure that others can do theirs.
Also to add, I am now taking a second position on Toyon as one of the Literary Criticism editors. It is super exciting to be joining the editing team and I cannot wait to read our entries!
